When it comes to strength, hardness and flexibility, Hickory's the one. Commonly used for tool handles and sporting equipment, it has a varied grain from straight to sometimes irregular and wavy. Because of its hardness, workability is difficult, blunting cutting blades easily. If planing irregular grain, reduce cutting angle to save your tools. If you're ever hungry, chip up some hickory, since its chips are useful in smoking meat. |
